Snowboarding is so much more than just a sport. It is a way of life, a purpose, a tight-knit community. Fortunately, I have had the privilege of being a part of this community for most of my life. It matured me at a young age, inspired my creativity, brought me a lot of struggles and successes, and truly has shaped almost all of who I am. I wanted to make a tribute to the ones who inspired me and the whole community the most. All unfortunately lost to unexpected causes. Although I created this zine tribute from my personal knowledge and emotions, I wanted to lightly display short texts and visuals so that anybody could appreciate it. If you haven't snowboarded, you probably wouldn't know who these people are but I am sure you can appreciate. I wanted there to be a sense of beauty and celebration within these spreads as well as some visual backstories. The intention of the portraits on each spread was to add some intimacy to study everything down to the person's wrinkles or freckles. Then, give a short burst explanation of who they were and why they made so much of an impact on the snowboard community. As for the visuals besides the photographs, I wanted to add little mementos from their lives like a brand they started or a lifestyle they lived to inspire. Next, I needed to contour-draw the simplistic features of them on their snowboards as they all had iconic styles that pushed the progression of snowboarding. Lastly, the flowers. Each flower represents the types of people they were and well as riders, metaphorically. Some flowers are more ridged than others, some flow and display smooth lines, and one has a bowl-like shape as this individual has carried the community on his back since the beginning. The process brought out so many underlying emotions I hadn't experienced in a while but in the end, I was much happier and had a stronger sense of appreciation and love.
